Night Prayer
7pm, First Sundays Night Prayer is for everyone looking for peace, for comfort, for a quiet place to pray. At Night Prayer there is no sermon, no dogma. Just a half-hour of peaceful music, thoughtful prayer, and candlelight. Night Prayer takes place at the Episcopal Parish of the Messiah in Newton, where everyone is welcome. There is no Night Prayer in July and August. Night Prayer returns this Fall at a New Time!
Starting this Fall, Night Prayer will be at 7 pm. Our hope is that this earlier hour will make it easier for our friends to come to Night Prayer. The service will still be the familiar, meditative candlelit Night Prayer that we've come to love. Night Prayer is on summer vacation right now, but we'll return with a simple Night Prayer service in September at 7pm, during the Labor Day weekend, and then on October 2, the Feast of the Guardian Angels, with our full choir. There is no Night Prayer in July and August. Remember, First Sundays at seven o'clock, starting in September! One of the gifts of moving Night Prayer to 7pm is the opportunity to celebrate the Service of Light, a ceremony that is now a prelude to Evensong, and which has its roots in the candle-lighting prayers of the Sabbath. This liturgy, the Lucernariumis the key which opens the service of vespers (evensong to Anglicans), a celebration of the light of God's love, spreading throughout the world and overcoming fear, death and hatred. The lucernarium concludes with the ancient hymn, Phos Hilaron, the oldest recorded hymn in Christianity. It may have been composed by Saint Athenogenes, who died in 305 AD, and was sung in Jerusalem at Christ's tomb as the light from the tomb was brought forth into the church every evening. You are invited to join Night Prayer and the Parish of the Messiah in supporting the Newton Food Pantry. There will be a collection box by the main entrance to the church, where you can bring canned and dry goods (rice, pasta, soups, and more). There is a great deal of "hidden" poverty in Newton, from house-bound elders to young families recently out of work. In this current economy, your donation to the Newton Food Pantry means a lot. Thank you.
Our "food of the month" for the Newton Food Pantry is: Rice. Auditions for Schola Nocturna
